Rosemary Church Career
Church has been a CNN International reporter for more than 30 years and has won several awards for his work covering big events around the world. In Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, she hosts CNN Newsroom in the morning. In Asia and Australia, she does the same thing in the afternoon. On CNN International, her shows air Monday through Thursday from 07:00 to 09:00 GMT/02:00 to 04:00 ET.
Church has been with CNN since 1998 and has covered many big events around the world and talked to a huge number of analysts and newsmakers. She was on the air when the news came out that Osama bin Laden had died. During her show, the news came out that Japan had an earthquake and a possible tsunami, which led to hours of live coverage of the tragedy.
She led the network’s coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the rescue efforts for the 12 boys and their coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand, and the Parkland, Florida school shooting, where survivors spoke out against gun violence in America. She also talked about the terrible events at Fuego Volcano in Guatemala, the meeting in Singapore between President Trump and Kim Jong Un of North Korea, the chemical attack in Douma, Syria, which killed many people, and the immigration problem in Europe.
This year, she talked to famous Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim right after Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad freed him from prison and gave him a pardon. She also talked to former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd about the Trump-Kim summit and author Bill Browder about the dangers he thinks Vladimir Putin poses to the world.
Church, Nick Paton Walsh, and Phil Black won the prestigious Golden Nymph Award for Best 24-Hour News Programme at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 2014 for their coverage of the unrest in Ukraine, which included a shooting that killed someone in Kiev’s Independence Square during protests against the government. The same story also won them the award for Best Short News Report at the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) awards. She also helped CNN win the 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award for its coverage of the fight between Israel and Hezbollah.
Church worked as the Senior Anchor for five years at Australia Television (ATV), which was the country’s first foreign satellite news service. When she went to Asia, she also filed stories for ATV and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Foreign Correspondent program. Church won the New York Festival’s TV programming award while working at ATV for his coverage of China’s takeover of Hong Kong in 1997. Church started working at ABC TV in 1991 as a reporter and host for the main evening news show in Tasmania. She also hosted the summer version of ABC TV’s World at Noon show.
Before this, Church worked for five years with the National Media Liaison Service at Parliament House in Canberra. During that time, she also hosted weekend news shows on Channel Ten’s news service. In 1984, she worked for a Member of the Federal Parliament as a scriptwriter and media officer. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University in Canberra and has also done graduate work at the University of Canberra in both law and media.
