Smith pursued his education at Santa Rosa Junior College, focusing on A.A. in Communication. In 1999, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in Communication Management from Emerson College. Furthermore, he is an Army veteran with a four-year tenure on active duty, serving as an 81E in Germany, primarily involved in producing and editing training videos. Joining the Army without a specific plan at first, he considers it one of the best decisions of his life. Four years after his military service, he transitioned to broadcasting, drawn to the world of TV production. Utilizing the GI Bill, he pursued his education and became the first in his family to earn a degree.
Subsequently, he attended grad school at Emerson College in Boston. Following graduate studies, he entered the field of news reporting by initially working as a video shooter for a Boston news station. Despite being assigned to challenging neighborhoods, his dedication and skills caught the attention of the news director, leading to an opportunity as an on-air reporter. Over the years, he refined his broadcasting skills at various stations across the country. Currently, he is a correspondent for NewsNation’s “Morning In America” national morning newscast, hosted by Adrienne Bankert. He joined the network in August 2021.
Additionally, he co-hosts “Laugh And Learn” with Flame Monroe on Charlamagne tha God’s Black Effect Network on iHeartRadio since October 2020. Moreover, he serves as the evening anchor and managing editor for Waypoint Media L.L.C. Prior to NewsNation, he worked as a news anchor and host for Fox Television, handling evening news at WTTG-TV and hosting Fox 5’s “Like It Or Not.” He has also hosted and produced the Travel Channel’s “Street Eats” and the true crime reenactment series “Justice By Any Means.” In his earlier career, he worked as a news reporter for ABC Television, based in Oakland, and occasionally filled in as a news anchor.
He has experience working with E! Entertainment Television, Fox News, and FremantleMedia. Beyond journalism, he has worked in corporate relations as a principal for Pacific Gas and Electric Company. He also served as a public affairs officer for the US General Services Administration and Federal Protective Service. In addition, he is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, regularly addressing issues related to diversity and inclusion.
