Michael Holmes Biography
Michael Holmes is an Australian anchor and correspondent working for CNN as an anchor and correspondent for CNN International (CNNI), anchoring CNN Newsroom with Michael Holmes since 2019. The shows air between the hours of 12 am and 4 am Friday through Monday ET. He joined the CNN news team in April 1996, after previously working for Nine Network Australia.

Holmes is a CNN International anchor and journalist who has won many awards and works out of the network’s headquarters in Atlanta. He has been a reporter for more than 40 years and is the host of CNN Newsroom with Michael Holmes from 12 am to 3 am ET (5-8 am GMT) Friday through Monday. Holmes joined CNNI as the first Australian anchor in 1996. He has also reported from more than 80 countries and went to many more. He has worked in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, India, Nepal, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
From the border between Mexico and Guatemala, he reported on the migrant crisis in Central America. He also wrote about how a man from El Salvador and his young daughter drowned while trying to cross into the United States. Their bodies were found together on the banks of the Rio Grande. In the past few months, they have also been asked to cover the deadly protests on the border between Israel and Gaza, the Israeli elections, and the fire at Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral.
Holmes has covered about many wars, such as those in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, the West Bank, and Gaza. He took more than a dozen trips to Iraq, most of them for weeks at a time, to report on the war there from the very beginning. He wrote about every part of the war, from the uprising and occupation to Saddam Hussein’s trial and death. In January 2004, he lived through an attack on a CNN convoy of two cars, in which two CNN employees were killed and one was hurt. In the fall of 2016, Holmes spent a few weeks in Iraq to cover the attack led by Iraq to take Mosul back from ISIS. CNN won a Peabody Award in 2016 for its coverage of the Battle for Mosul, ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and Undercover in Syria, in part because of his work.
In March 2016, he reported from Brussels about the terrorist attacks at the Zaventum airport and the Maelbeek metro stop that killed many people. Holmes wrote about Belgium’s reaction to the ISIS attacks for several days. He even got an exclusive interview with Hicham Chaib’s family member. Holmes was the anchor of CNN’s breaking news coverage of the terrorist killings in Paris in 2015. The show won the 2016 Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for “Best Breaking News Coverage.”
Holmes has spent a lot of his work reporting from the world’s trouble spots, like Ukraine, where he reported live from Kiev on the riots and was in Crimea for the controversial vote that led to Russia taking over Crimea. He also wrote about the change in Libya that got rid of Moammar Gadhafi. Holmes spent a few weeks with the rebels as they moved from the western mountains to several towns and cities, where there was sometimes fierce fighting. He has also reported from Afghanistan several times, where he spent weeks with Afghan and U.S. troops fighting. A CNN documentary On Assignment: Month of Mayhem, which won an award in 2007, showed Holmes working as a reporter in Iraq during one of the bloodiest months since the war began in 2003.
In April 2002, he was one of the few reporters who was in Ramallah during the Israeli invasion. Despite being shot at by Israeli soldiers, he was able to get an exclusive interview with Yasser Arafat in his besieged offices, which was a very dangerous time in the West Bank. Holmes had seen a lot of unique things from the area, like violence on both sides of that fight. He has also covered many natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Sandy, Michael, Irma, and Maria. For his work on Irma and Maria, he won the Edward R. Murrow Award.
As a news anchor, he has talked to prime ministers and presidents of several countries, covered a huge number of live events and breaking news stories from around the world, and hosted and moderated several CNN special events, such as Future Summit and Principal Voices. Holmes worked for Australia’s Nine Network before joining CNNI. He was one of only a few Australian reporters who were there during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
For four years, he lived in London and covered current events for the network. He covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first Palestinian intifada, Northern Ireland, and the start of the first Gulf War. A TV award for his coverage of the 1990 miners’ uprising in Bucharest won him the Australian Television Society Award for Coverage of a Current Affairs Story. He started working in TV in 1982 with the Nine Network in Perth. Before that, he worked in newspapers for almost five years. Besides this, he has also worked for several British media outlets, such as TV-AM, WTN, and The Observer newspaper. His first job was as a cub reporter for the Perth afternoon newspaper Daily News when he was 17.
