John Miller Biography

John Miller is an American former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism of the NYPD working for CNN as a Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst. He joined the CNN news team in September 2022, after previously working for NYPD.

John Miller Career

Miller first worked as a reporter for the New York City TV station WNEW in 1983. Between 1985 and 1994, he worked as an investigative reporter for WNBC, another TV station in New York. During his time at the station, he talked to John Gotti more than once.

Some of his coworkers thought he was “going over to the dark side” when he became the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (chief spokesman) for the New York City Police Department from 1994 to 1995. He was hired because Commissioner William Bratton asked for him to be.

Miller was a correspondent for ABC News starting in 1995. Later on, in May 1998, Miller asked Mohammed Atef to set up a meeting between Osama bin Laden and an al-Qaeda agent in London. Miller was told to meet bin Laden in a camp near Kandahar in Islamabad, Pakistan. He was taken over the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan to get there. An al-Qaeda translator translated the questions he asked bin Laden into Arabic. However, bin Laden’s comments were not translated, so Miller did not know what bin Laden was saying right away during the interview.

During his time at ABC, Miller also covered the September 11 attacks. He sat with Peter Jennings all day and listened to radio calls from the FBI, the fire department, and the police, telling Jennings and the viewers what they were talking about. It was in January 2002 that Miller and Barbara Walters became co-anchors of the ABC News show 20/20.

In January 2003, he resigned from ABC News to work with Bratton again. At that time, Bratton was working at the Los Angeles Police Department. Miller was the head of the police department’s Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau. This bureau was made up of the Major Crimes Division, the Emergency Services Division, and the Special Investigations Section (SIS).

Miller started Project Archangel while he was there. This included the Automated Critical Asset Management System (ACAMS) and other platforms. Other towns and states have since used this system to keep an eye on the risk of possible terrorist targets. Miller also helped create the Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC), which works with the FBI, LAPD, and LA Sheriff to find out about things and figure out what they mean.

Miller became the Assistant Director for Public Affairs at the FBI in Washington, D.C., in September 2005. As part of his job, he was in charge of the FBI’s internal and external communications. This included dealing with the news media and managing fugitive press, community relations, and other communication support.

Miller also set up an Employee Communications Unit to help the 31,000 workers of the bureau communicate better with each other. As an extra job, he had to be on the Strategic Execution Team (SET), which set standards for how to measure the performance of intelligence operations across the FBI’s 56 field offices.

Robert Mueller, who was FBI director at the time, was in charge of the system, which was based on the CompStat method used by large police forces. Thereafter, Miller quit his job at the FBI in 2011 to become a senior reporter for CBS News. He wrote an article for the 2013 “Inside the NSA” episode of 60 Minutes that was criticized for giving the NSA permission to spy on American people.

Miller announced in December 2013 that he was leaving CBS to become the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism at the New York Police Department. Moreover, he went back to William Bratton, who had just been named NYPD Commissioner by Mayor Bill de Blasio. Miller quit his job with the NYPD at the end of July 2022. Miller was hired by CNN in September 2022 and made their chief agent for law enforcement and intelligence.
