Sean Duffy Career
Duffy was on the sixth season of MTV’s The Real World: Boston in 1997. He also appeared on Road Rules: All Stars in 1998, which is where he met Rachel Campos, who would become his wife. After that, Duffy was on the 2002 show Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Seasons. Both of them were in a filmed part of The Real World Awards Bash in 2008, when Duffy was the district attorney.
Duffy has been a color commentator for ESPN during televised events. In 2003, he was both a competitor and a commentator on ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games. His name was given to him as an honorary athlete for the Badger State Games in 2004. Duffy and Dagen McDowell were co-hosts of the Fox Business show The Bottom Line in December 2022. The show’s first episode aired on January 23, 2023.
Duffy is a Republican who was named Ashland County District Attorney by Governor Scott McCallum in 2002 to take over for Michael Gableman. He won again without a challenge in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008. In 2008, Duffy was one of 10 Republicans from Wisconsin who were running for president.
Duffy launched his run for Congress in Wisconsin’s seventh congressional district on July 8, 2009. People thought Duffy wasn’t going to win the race until May 2010, when Dave Obey, a Democratic congressman who had been in office for 15 years, said he wouldn’t run for re-election. After Obey made his statement, Julie Lassa, a Democrat and state senator, joined the race.
On June 4, 2010, Duffy said he was stepping down as Ashland County District Attorney to focus on his campaign for Congress. After three weeks, the retirement took effect, and Duffy went back to working in his father’s law firm. He won the race on November 2, 2010, and was one of many Republicans across the country who were chosen to Congress that day.
Several sources say that he won because he started his campaign ten months before Lassa did, because he organized and raised money from the ground up, because he was a district attorney, and because voters were unhappy with the economy. In 2011, Duffy voted to get rid of the Davis–Bacon Act’s requirements for government projects to pay prevailing wages.
In March 2011, Duffy went to a public town hall-style meeting in his district put on by the Polk County Republicans. The video shows that after a state bill was passed that would have frozen the pay of state workers, Duffy was asked if he would be willing to give up his own $174,000 salary. Duffy replied that he would only be ready to do that if all government workers’ pay was cut. He also insisted that he was “struggling” to get by, even though his salary was almost three times the average for Wisconsin residents.
When Duffy and fellow rookie Republican Rick Crawford (Arkansas) wrote an open letter to Speaker John Boehner on December 22, 2011, they asked the leader to let the House vote on the Senate’s deal to extend the tax cuts for two months. In 2013, Duffy and Michael Michaud (Maine), a Democrat in the House, proposed a resolution asking the government to make sure that people can get information on paper as well as electronically.
Duffy was a member of the panel that looked into Planned Parenthood. He agreed with President Donald Trump’s 2017 order to temporarily stop people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Duffy helped pass a bill in January 2017 that would end the Endangered Species Act’s protections for grey wolves. In February 2017, Duffy talked to Alisyn Camerota of CNN.
He agreed with President Trump’s ban on travel and immigration, which was meant to fight extreme Islamist terrorists. When Camerota asked Duffy about the Quebec City mosque killing and why Trump hadn’t said anything about the white terrorists who did it. According to Duffy, Europe, China, Canada, and Mexico’s actions against the United States with tariffs were “economic terrorism in a way” in July 2018. Duffy gave up his seat on September 23, 2019, so he could care for his baby daughter who has a heart defect.
He graduated from St. Mary’s University and got his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. As a child, Duffy learned to log roll. At age 13, he began speed climbing, which means running up 60- and 90-foot poles. He has two titles for speed climbing.
