John Avlon is an American political commentator working for CNN as a Senior Political Analyst and Anchor. He joined the CNN news team in January 2010, after previously working for The Daily Beast.

Avlon’s first job was writing speeches for Mayor Rudy Giuliani when he was very young. He got a raise and is now Chief Speechwriter and Deputy Director of Policy. From 1999 to 2001, he wrote the mayor’s addresses for the State of the City, as well as testimony to Congress on homeland security and a message to the UN General Assembly on counterterrorism. His job at the Manhattan Institute was as a senior fellow as well. He serves on the boards of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, the Citizens Union of New York, and the Bronx Academy of Letters.
Avlon started working for The Daily Beast a month after it started in 2008. The Daily Beast got over 17 awards for great journalism and doubled its traffic to 1.1 million people a day while Avlon was in charge.
In May 2018, Avlon said he was leaving The Daily Beast to become a Senior Political Analyst and Anchor at CNN. “John Avlon has been a superb editorial leader of the Daily Beast,” said Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC, in a statement soon after Avlon announced his departure. He has created a strong newsroom and an attitude of doing good work and being polite. I only wish him the best for the future, and I’m very grateful that he hired Noah Shachtman as his backup so that we can keep up the terrific work that the Daily Beast does.
Furthermore, Avlon has been on many TV shows, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show, and Real Time with Bill Maher. He has also been on news shows on MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and C-SPAN. In 2005, Avlon went on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart for the first time to talk about his book Independent Nation.
In June 2018, Avlon became a full-time Senior Political Analyst at CNN. He appeared every day on New Day and was a guest host on shows like State of America and Reliable Sources. His “Reality Check” segment on New Day was called “a standout and a welcome feature on television in a time when reality-based news coverage is lacking of late.” Several films, such as HBO’s Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists, 2010’s Gerrymandering, the History Channel’s miniseries Washington, and CNN’s Lincoln: Divided We Stand, have talked to Avlon.
CNN revealed in September 2021 that Reality Check with John Avlon: Extremist Beat would be starting. This digital show will follow the growth of extremist groups in the United States. He hopes the series can help put these kinds of movements in their proper historical context in America. By pointing out these connections, I believe that people can suddenly see how they may have been sucked into something.
