In 1990, Tolin got his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Washington in Seattle. He attended the University of Arkansas where he got his Ph.D. in clinical psychology. He also earned a Board certification in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. As head of the Society of Clinical Psychology in 2014, Tolin led a branch of the American Psychological Association. In 2020-2021, Tolin was head of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

Tolin is an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and the founder and director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living. He has been President-Elect of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and President of the American Psychological Association’s Clinical Psychology Division. He also works for the National Institutes of Health as a principal scientist. The Connecticut Psychological Association gave him the Award for Lifetime Contribution to Psychology.

Additionally, Dr. Tolin has written more than 200 scientific journal articles and three books: Doing CBT: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Behaviors, Thoughts, and Emotions; Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding; and Face Your Fears: A Proven Plan to Beat Anxiety, Panic, Phobias, and Obsessions. The reality TV shows “Hoarders,” “The OCD Project,” and “My Shopping Addiction” have all featured Dr. Tolin. He has also been a regular guest on “The Dr. Oz Show” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
