Anderson Cooper Vanderbilt
In the United States, the Vanderbilt family became well-known during the Gilded Age. Cornelius Vanderbilt built huge shipping and train companies that made his family rich. They went on to be successful in other business and charity ventures as well. His children and grandchildren built huge houses on Fifth Avenue in New York City, fancy “summer cottages” in Newport, Rhode Island, the huge Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina, and many other very fancy homes. The family also built Berkshire houses in the western part of Massachusetts. Elm Court in Lenox and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, is one example.
The Vanderbilts used to be the richest family in the US. Up until he died in 1877, Cornelius Vanderbilt was the richest person in the United States. After he died, his son William Henry Vanderbilt took over his father’s wealth and was the richest person in America until he died in 1885. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that the Vanderbilts lost their status. Ten of their grand Fifth Avenue buildings were torn down, and most of their other homes were sold or turned into museums. This period has been called the “Fall of the House of Vanderbilt.”
