In this video, unsuspecting ordinary men were asked to read aloud real and degrading tweets directed at Spain and DiCaro while sitting face-to-face. The purpose of the video was to shed light on the online sexual harassment, unjust criticism, rape threats, and death threats that female sportscasters endure in the course of their work. The impactful four-minute video, produced by Just Not Sports and One Tree Forest Films, was recognized with a 2016 Peabody Award in the Public Service category.

Sarah Spain Super Bowl XLI

In 2007, Spain gained widespread attention when she posted an eBay auction offering to be someone’s “date” to Super Bowl XLI, featuring the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts. Residing in Los Angeles at the time, she had initially planned to attend the game with friends and had already purchased a plane ticket to Miami. However, her friends backed out due to financial constraints, leaving her without company or a game ticket.

To remedy the situation, she created the auction as a publicity stunt, hoping to attract media attention and potentially secure sponsorship for her Super Bowl attendance. Unilever, the makers of Axe Body Spray, caught wind of the auction and covered her expenses to attend the game. In return, they launched a media campaign to explore how many individuals would go to similar lengths for a chance to see their favorite team play. Spain clarifies that criticisms of the Super Bowl stunt often misconstrue both her actions and motivations behind the unconventional auction.
