Rob Elgas Biography
Rob Elgas is an American multiple Emmy Award-winning anchor and a reporter who is currently working at ABC7 Chicago. He began serving as the co-anchor of the weekday 4 PM newscast alongside Judy Hsu in May 2016. In addition, he joined the ABC 7 team on July 7, 2015, as a reporter and fill-in anchor.

Chicago is his native home and he brings with him more than twenty years of news experience to ABC 7. Previously, he worked at NBC 5 in Chicago where he served as the afternoon anchor and ate evening news reporter. Over the years, he has received a number of Emmy Awards including an Emmy for breaking news coverage of a devastating tornado in the area. In addition, he has reported from Naplate, Illinois after a tornado outbreak devastated the small town. Furthermore, he also co-hosted the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade alongside Judy Hsu, Janet Davies, and Cheryl Burton.
In addition, he has been honored with the Peter Lisagor and Associated Press awards for his live breaking news coverage of protests in Chicago in 2014. He also did win Emmy Awards for co-hosting a number of specials inclusive of a Winter Olympic special called Hometown Hopeful that featured Chicago Olympians. He has also covered two Olympics including the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Furthermore, he has traveled to Washington, D.C. for the State of the Union, and covered breaking news in California and Texas for ABC 7. However, his most memorable assignment was covering the historic World Series win by the Chicago Cubs, along with Mark Giangreco and Jim Rose in Cleveland for breaking news coverage of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Before he relocated back to Chicago in 2002, he worked in El Paso, Texas at ABC 7.
He began working at ABC 7 in El Paso, Texas in 1998 and while he was at the station, he served as a weekend anchor and later was promoted to serving as the co-anchoring of the morning show from 2000 to the year 2002. Elgas started his broadcasting career behind the lens in Champaign-Urbana where he worked for WICD-TV as a photographer.
In addition, he studied agricultural communications and journalism at the University of Illinois and later landed his first job in television. Rob is a member of NAHJ, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He was born in Arlington Heights and brought up in Crystal Lake, Elgas.
