Mark Stitz Biography
Mark Stitz is an American meteorologist working for KMTV 3 as a weekday morning chief meteorologist. He joined the KMTV 3 news team in December 2017, after previously working for WVLA-TV.
Stitz grew up in Canton, Ohio, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He attended The Ohio State University in Ohio and received his degree in meteorology while he was there. Following several bitterly cold and snowy Ohio winters, Stitz relocated to San Angelo, Texas, where he took his first TV job. There, he spent almost four years predicting the intense heat and violent storms brought on by the dry line—a typical Southern Plains feature that divides moist Gulf of Mexico air from dry desert air. Stitz obtained his American Meteorological Society designation as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist while he was living in Texas. Broadcast meteorologists who satisfy specified standards for scientific proficiency and proficient communication in their weather forecasting are awarded the CBM designation by the American Meteorological Society (AMS).
Stitz later relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, a city well-known for its bourbon and thoroughbred horse farms. He forecasted the weather he grew up with—spring storms and winter snow—for more than two years there. Later, he relocated to the South and began working in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Despite the fact that this period coincided with the exceptionally active 2017 hurricane season, it was not named storms that produced the most significant weather events. During the outbreaks in February 2016 and February 2017, Stitz spent hours in the air assisting with the tracking of the tornadoes. In August 2016, after more than 20 inches of rain, historic flooding also hit Baton Rouge and the neighboring cities.
