Juliette Binoche Career

When Juliette debuted in 1988’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being, she was just 23 years old and captured the interest of international critics. She was described as being “almost ethereal in her beauty and innocence” by Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert, whose books on cinema and television criticism have an international following. By the time Binoche finished Louis Malle’s Damage (1992) (also known as “Fatale”), that innocence had vanished. Binoche stated: “Malle was trying direct and wanted something more sophisticated” in a post-release interview. Three Colors: Blue (1993) by Krzysztof Kieslowski was added to her list of credits a year later.

Binoche took a break from filmmaking in 1994 to become a mother, and in 1995 she was cast as the lead in The Horseman in the Roof, the most costly film ever made in France at $35 million. Her most recent films are Chocolat (2000) and The English Patient (1996), for which she received an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress.” She attended a Catholic convent school before deciding to pursue acting classes at the École Nationale des Arts Dramatiques and the Paris Conservatory. She debuted as an actress in the French film “Les Nanas” at the age of twenty. Following her discovery, the gifted Frenchwoman was given a supporting role in the 1985 film “Maria and Joseph” by director Jean-Luc Godard. Not to mention that the Vatican strongly objected to the modern Bible adaptation, it created quite a commotion.

She landed her first significant role in André Téchinés’ “Rendez-Vous” in 1985. For her acting work, she was given the “Romy Schneider Prize”. 1988 saw Juliette Binoche’s breakthrough performance in the Kudera film adaption of “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.” Binoche received accolades from all around the world for the movie. American film offers came next, but the Frenchwoman was more partial to European productions. She played the lead in Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colors: Blue.” At the Venice Film Festival, the project took home the Golden Lion.

The remaining two movies in the Farben trilogy also starred Juliette Binoche. She was romantically involved with French actor Benoît Magimel from 1999 to 2003. Together, they gave birth to a daughter. She had already given birth to a son in a prior marriage. In 1996, she experienced her greatest level of global recognition with “The English Patient,” for which Binoche received an Oscar for her supporting performance. In 2000, she was nominated for another Oscar for the film Chocolat, in which she co-starred with Johnny Depp. Through recordings delivered anonymously, Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche play a Parisian couple whose lives descend into a nightmare.

In private, Binoche and her two kids, Raphael and Hannah, made their home in Paris. She was named President of the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival jury in December 2018. She portrayed the lead in Safy Nebbou’s French feature drama “The Way You Want Me” in the same year. The film made its world premiere on February 10, 2019, during the 69th Berlin International Feature Festival. Additionally, she was awarded the European Film Awards’ “Best European Achievement in World Cinema” prize.
