John Roberts Career

Roberts attended Erindale Secondary School and Lorne Park Secondary School before pursuing his education at the University of Toronto’s Erindale College. His early foray into radio began at the local college station, CFRE-FM in Mississauga. In 1975, he secured his first professional position as a reporter and news anchor with CFOS in Owen Sound, Ontario. Subsequently, he transitioned to CHYM in Kitchener, where he served as both a newsman and DJ. He later worked on-air for radio station CJBK in London, Ontario, in 1977, before returning to Toronto later that year. In Toronto, he joined the top-40 powerhouse CHUM as a weekday evening disc jockey, adopting the on-air name J. D. Roberts, bestowed upon him by 1050 CHUM and CITY-TV.

In 1979, he expanded beyond his radio career to co-host The NewMusic, a music newsmagazine on CITY-TV, alongside Jeanne Beker. This collaboration lasted until 1985. Notably, The New Music was a groundbreaking program that preceded MTV, earning him, Beker, and the New Music team numerous awards for their contributions. Concurrently, he served as an Entertainment reporter for CITY-TV and occasionally filled in for John Majhor and later Brad Giffen on the local music video show Toronto Rocks. In 1984, he took on the role of the face of MuchMusic, Canada’s music channel, and alongside Christopher Ward, he became one of the first on-air personalities when the network launched. At MuchMusic, he hosted various programs, including a one-hour heavy metal video show titled The Power Hour.

In 1987, he departed MuchMusic to anchor CityPulse on CITY-TV. He assumed the role of anchor for the 10 pm CityPulse Tonight after Anne Mroczkowski’s move to the 6 pm edition alongside Gord Martineau. Between 1989 and 1990, he served as an anchor and reporter for WCIX (now WFOR-TV), the CBS-owned and operated television station in Miami, Florida. He returned to Canada in September 1990 to co-host the national CTV morning show Canada AM. He initially served alongside Deborah McGregor and later with Pamela Wallin. In 1992, he relocated to CBS News in New York, where he initially anchored the CBS Morning News with co-anchor Meredith Vieira. He also served as the newsreader and substitute anchor for Harry Smith on CBS This Morning and The Early Show. From 1994 to 1995, he anchored the 5 pm and 11 pm newscasts at CBS’s flagship station in New York, WCBS-TV.

In March 1995, he moved back to the CBS Network as the anchor of the CBS Sunday Evening News, a position he held for nearly 11 years. Additionally, he anchored the CBS Saturday Evening News from February 1999 until becoming CBS Chief White House Correspondent in August 1999. He served as the chief White House Correspondent at CBS from August 1999 to February 2006 and regularly anchored a Sunday afternoon 3 pm ET newscast for the CBS Radio Network. In March 2003, he was embedded with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marines during the initial invasion of Iraq. Notably, on July 19, 2005, he introduced CBS’s coverage of the announcement of the nomination of John Roberts for the Supreme Court of the United States.

In a light-hearted moment, he jokingly requested colleagues to refer to him as “Your Honor” due to sharing the same name as Justice Roberts. Although widely considered a potential replacement for CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather after Rather stepped down from the anchor desk in March 2005, Roberts was not selected for the role. During his tenure at CBS, Roberts received three national Emmy awards and a Gracie award for his coverage of groundbreaking surgery to repair neural tube defects. He made a significant career move in February 2006 when he left CBS and joined CNN. In July and August of that year, he reported from the front lines during the Israel/Hezbollah war, even embedding with an Israeli infantry unit and marching 10 miles into Lebanon. For this coverage, Roberts received a Headline Award, and CNN’s overall reporting on the war earned an Edward R. Murrow Award.

In January 2017, he became the chief White House correspondent for Fox News, covering the activities of President Donald Trump.
