Greg Groogan Biography

Greg Groogan is an American Emmy-Award Winning reporter working for FOX26 as a special projects reporter and a host for the weekly, political talk show “What’s Your Point?”. He joined the FOX26 news team in 2000, after previously working for KRIV-TV.

Greg Groogan Career

Groogan entered the television industry in the Texas border town of Laredo shortly after completing his studies in the University of Texas Plan II honors program (a fact he can substantiate with his diploma). In 1989, he left the arid landscapes of South Texas for the colder environs of Alaska, America’s 49th state. During his tenure at Anchorage stations KIMO and KTUU, he dedicated a significant portion of a year to reporting on the Exxon Valdez oil spill, then considered the nation’s most substantial environmental disaster.

In 1990, he returned to Texas, assuming the role of capital bureau chief and later an investigative reporter for Austin’s ABC station KVUE, where he delved into state politics. His journalistic journey took him north again in 1997, this time to Cleveland, where he spent three years at NBC affiliate WKYC. By 2000, he found his way back to Texas, combining professional pursuits with family life. As a broadcast reporter for Houston Business Journal FOX 26, he provided comprehensive coverage of the Enron collapse and the energy trading sector.

In recognition of his outstanding work, he has not only received Emmys but also amassed an impressive collection of 38 Associated Press Awards. He has been honored by various organizations, including the Houston Press Club, Dallas Press Club, Cleveland Press Club, Alaska Press Club and Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. In addition to that, the Ft. Worth Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, Texas Bar Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Cancer Society, Texas State Teachers Association, Harris County Medical Society, and the Austin Chronicle have also honored him.

Additionally, he holds the distinction of receiving a national Best of Gannett award for news writing. In the years 2010, 2013, and 2017, the Houston Press Club recognized him with the prestigious title of Television Journalist of the Year. Notably, the National Education Writers Association bestowed upon him its top prize for beat reporting in 2010. Moreover, his remarkable achievements extend to being a seven-time regional recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award. Additionally, he has earned the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism twice for his compelling stories on children with special needs. His commitment to excellence in reporting on Texans facing disabilities has also been acknowledged through the Barbara Jordan Award, which he has received three times.

In 2008, he and his colleagues at Fox 26 received the Fourth Estate Award from the American Legion, marking the organization’s highest national honor for journalism. This recognition further underscores his dedication to outstanding journalism and the impact of his work on both a local and national level.
