Gilma Avalos is an American anchor working for NBC 4 as a weekend evening anchor at 6 pm and 11 pm alongside Rana Novini, and she also serves as a general assignment reporter. She joined the NBC 4 news team in October 2014.

El Salvador is where Avalos was born and she was brought up in Miami where she learned English as a second language. Gilma began her television career when she was 12 years as the host of “Paleokids,” which is a Spanish-language children’s program. She attended Columbia University where she graduated in 2008, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Hispanic Studies. In addition, she then interned at NBC News Partnerships at 30 Rockefeller Plaza

For her reporting on COVID-19, the NBC 4 New York station, was honored in January 2021 with the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award. Over the years, Gilma has covered many of the Tri-State’s biggest stories since 2019 when she joined WNBC. Prior to joining WNBC, she worked at KTVT, the CBS Owned station in Dallas/Fort Worth. Furthermore, before Gilma joined KTVT, she worked at NBC 6/WTVJ-TV in Miami where she served as a general assignment reporter and multimedia journalist.

While she worked for NBC 6/WTVJ-TV, she was among the first South Florida reporters who covered Trayvon Martin’s shooting death. Later on, she traveled to Sanford, Florida where she covered the trial of George Zimmerman. In addition, Gilma started her journalism career at News 12 The Bronx, where she served as an anchor. While she was at the station, she covered the 2011, Hurricane Irene. Furthermore, Avalos also assisted in developing the pilot that would later become News 12 en Español.
