Derek Staahl Biography

Derek Staahl is an American Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter who is currently working at ABC 10 where he serves as the 4, 5, and 6 p.m weekdays newscasts anchor. He joined the ABC 10 news team in  September 2019.

He worked at the CW station in San Diego from 2011 as a reported and he was later promoted to serving as a weekend anchor and investigative reporter. While he worked at CW, he earned a regional Emmy award for covering wildfires and he launched a report partnership with the U.S. Marshals that resulted to the arrest of many violent felons. Staahl also did brake major stories in the Mayor Bob Filner scandal in addition to his investigations being featured in a UT San Diego article.

Prior to joining the ABC 10 team, he worked at the CBS duopoly in Phoenix for four years. Staahl also made appearances on HLN and CNN  on major breaking news stories in Arizona such as the volatile protests downtown and the search for a serial killer. In addition, for a series of investigative reports on the Scottsdale Unified School District, he was awarded an Emmy award and an Arizona Education Association award. His investigations also resulted in the resignation of four administrators.

Furthermore, he started his career at WKOW in Madison where he served as a reporter. During his leisure time, he enjoys cheering on his USC Trojans, hiking, playing softball, and beach volleyball. Derek played quads in the Trojan Marching Band’s drumline and he continues to play drums.
