Derek Staahl is an American Emmy-winning anchor and reporter working for 3TV as a weekday evening anchor at 4 pm and 8 pm. He rejoined the Arizona Family in September 2022, after previously working for The E.W. Scripps Company. 

Staahl had previously worked at 3TV from 2015 to 2019 as an anchor and reporter. During that time, he covered everything from the search for a serial killer to protests downtown that spiraled into a scandal for Phoenix police. Derek did also make occasional live reporters on HLN and CNN. For a series of investigative reports on conflicts of interest within the Scottsdale Unified School District, Derek was awarded a regional Emmy and an award from the Arizona Education Association which are one of his proudest achievements. In addition, after his reports, legislators changed state laws related to school spending and four administrators resigned. The Arizona State Senate invited him to testify about his investigative reporting on the state’s medical marijuana industry.

Later in the year 2019, Staahl joined ABC 10News in San Diego as an anchor and reporter. While he worked at KGTV, he held a number of roles such as; primary news anchor and Live Center Anchor. He did also launch a long-form storytelling brand known as ‘In-Depth’ that explores nuanced topics. Furthermore, other employees were trained by him in the techniques of “In-Depth” storytelling, and later on, his brand became the model for 60 television stations across the country.

Los Angeles is Staahl’s native home and he attended the University of Southern California where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 2010. After graduating, he started his career at the ABC affiliate in Madison, Wisconsin where he served as a reporter. In addition, after Derek worked in Madison, he then relocated to San Diego where he worked for CW from 2011 to 2015. While working for CW, he began as a reporter, and within a short period, he was able to rise to become a weekend anchor and investigative reporter.

For covering wildfire, Derek earned his first regional Emmy. He launched a reporting partnership with the U.S. Marshals that resulted in the arrests of many violent felons. Additionally, he also broke major stories in the Mayor Bob Filner scandal, and his investigative efforts were featured in a UT San Diego article. During his spare time, he enjoys cheering on his USC Trojans, hiking, golfing, and playing drumset in a rock cover band.
