David Highfield Biography

David Highfield is an American 12-time Emmy award-winning anchor and host working for KDKA. He served as the morning co-anchor of “Your Day Pittsburgh” alongside Heather Abraham, and the co-host of “Pittsburgh Today Live.” In addition, David joined the KDKA news team in August 1991.

David Highfield Career

For Highfield’s reporting and hosting, he has won 12 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards. He is also the winner of two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards: one for an examination on how children are not woken up by smoke detectors on most occasions, and another for his report on a possible connection between Marcellus Shale drilling and earthquakes. In addition, for David’s feature reporting, he has received Golden Quills presented to him by the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association. For covering a flood, he received a Matrix award.

Furthermore, he was the creator, host, and executive producer of the Emmy award-winning “Your Pittsburgh,” which was an evening newsmagazine on KDKA that ran for seven years. Highfield began working at KDKA in 1991, as a writer, and later on, he was promoted to being a news producer. In addition, David worked in front of the camera for the first time as the Westmoreland County Bureau Chief and later as the Beaver/Butler Bureau Chief. Highfield also worked as an 11 pm fill-in anchor and reporter before he became a noon anchor in 2020.

Over the years, David has covered a number of news events and some of them include; the tragedy at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, the 9/11 attack from both Shanksville and the Pentagon, the death of Mayor Bob O’Connor, the crash of Flight 427, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Richard Baumhammers’ shooting spree in 2000, the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech, and Visits to the U.S. by Pope Francis and Pope Benedict.

In addition, a number of Highfield’s reports have aired on KCBS in Los Angeles and WCBS in New York. He has also been a live reporter on drought conditions for “CBS This Morning” at WBBM in Chicago. In 2008, he was inducted into the Ford City Hall of Fame. Many sports-related stories he covered earned him an induction into the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Furthermore, David has given some of his time to local charities such as; Animal Friends, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County, The KDKA-TV Turkey Fund, the American Red Cross, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Hair Peace, and Persad Center.

In the 2009 short film “Tommy and Me,” David took up a news reporter role, and the film was produced by Fleadh Films. It cashed in Operation Safety Net, which assists homeless people. Highfield attended Ford City High School where he earned a high school diploma. Later on, he joined Syracuse University where he studied in its S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and earned high honors.
