When Melvin was a high school student, he began working as an “Our Generation Reporter” for Columbia, South Carolina’s WIS-TV, an NBC affiliate, from 1995 to 1997. After graduating from college, he worked as a news photographer and producer at WIS again until joining the morning news team as a reporter and producer of the station’s “Craig Cam” live portions in July 2001. Before taking over the weekday newscasts, he was eventually elevated to the position of news anchor for the weekend morning and evening newscasts. Among other things, Melvin developed a number of shows for WIS-TV that addressed homelessness and education in Columbia. Melvin departed WIS-TV in July 2008 to work as the anchor of the weekend evening newscasts at WRC-TV, an NBC-owned and operated station in Washington, D.C.

Three years later, in July 2011, Melvin left WRC-TV to work as a daytime anchor for MSNBC. He continued to report for NBC News as well. In 2012, Melvin served as the host of MSNBC’s coverage of the Democratic and Republican national conventions, as well as TV One’s coverage of Election Night, which was organized in collaboration with NBC News. In December 2012, he covered the Sandy Hook massacres as well. Melvin was one of the NBC correspondents that covered the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in August of 2016 in addition to covering the tragic shooting of Dallas police officers in July. In the same year, he took over as anchor of MSNBC Live, which later changed its name to MSNBC Reports, replacing José Díaz-Balart.

Melvin began hosting his own true crime program, Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, in 2017. On July 21, it made its Oxygen premiere. He covered the Pyeongchang County Winter Olympics in 2018 with NBC, which aired in February. In September, he was elevated to the position of weekday news anchor on Today, and in October, he joined the host lineup for Today Third Hour.

Melvin co-hosted NBC’s yearly Christmas tree lighting broadcast in December 2020 at Rockefeller Center. He said in March 2022 that he would be concentrating on Today and leaving his hour-long MSNBC Reports slot behind.
