Ailsa Chang is an American anchor working for NPR as a co-host alongside Ari Shapiro, Mary Louise Kelly and Juana Summers for the show, all things considered. She joined the NPR news team in 2012, after previously working for WNYC.

Chang a distinguished journalist, co-hosts All Things Considered with Ari Shapiro, Mary Louise Kelly, and Juana Summers. Prior to her career in public radio, she practiced law for a few years. Her experience includes being a former correspondent for Planet Money, where she delved into legal intricacies, covering topics such as the underground asylum industry in the largest Chinatown in America, privacy rights in the cell phone age, the government’s unsuccessful battle against racist trademarks, and a money laundering case involving one of President Trump’s top campaign advisers.

Before that, she served as a congressional correspondent at NPR’s Washington Desk, reporting on contentious issues like healthcare, immigration, gun control, executive branch appointments, and the federal budget. Commencing her career as a radio reporter in 2009, Chang has garnered numerous national awards. In 2012, she received the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton for her investigation into the New York City Police Department’s “stop-and-frisk” policy and allegations of unlawful marijuana arrests. Her work also earned recognition from Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Chang has been honored with the Daniel Schorr Journalism Award, a National Headliner Award, and an award from Investigative Reporters and Editors for her examination of how Detroit’s flawed public defender system hinders lawyers from adequately representing their clients.In 2011, the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association presented Chang with the Art Athens Award for General Excellence in Individual Reporting for radio. Additionally, she won a National Journalism Award from the Asian American Journalists Association in 2015 for her coverage of Capitol Hill.

Before joining NPR, Chang served as an investigative reporter at NPR Member station WNYC in New York City from 2009 to 2012, focusing on criminal justice and legal affairs. She was a Kroc fellow at NPR from 2008 to 2009 and also worked as a reporter and producer for NPR Member station KQED in San Francisco. As a former lawyer, Chang worked as a law clerk to Judge John T. Noonan Jr. on the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree and earned her law degree with distinction from Stanford Law School, receiving the Irving Hellman Jr. Special Award for the best piece written by a student in the Stanford Law Review in 2001.

She was also a Fulbright Scholar at Oxford University, where she earned a master’s degree in media law, and she holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area without a dog, she is now the proud owner of Mickey Chang, a shih tzu who enjoys slapping high-fives and mingling with senators.
