William McGurn Biography
William McGurn is an American political writer and television personality working for FOX News Channel as a news writer. He joined the FOX News Channel team in 1992, after previously working as the chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush.

McGurn received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 1981. He then went to Boston University, where he received his master’s degree in communications. McGurn started out at the American Spectator as the managing editor. He became the Washington Bureau Chief of National Review in 1989 and remained there until 1992. McGurn was the senior editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review from 1992 to 1998. He afterward joined The Wall Street Journal as Chief Editorial Writer. In February 2005, he started working as a speechwriter for the White House. In 2006, he became President George W. Bush’s Chief Speechwriter. He left to take a visiting fellow position at Hillsdale College in February 2008. McGurn began working for News Corporation as a speechwriter for CEO Rupert Murdoch in early 2009. News Corporation acquired The Wall Street Journal in August 2007.
He started working as the New York Post’s Editorial Page Editor in December 2012. In April 2015, he returned to The Wall Street Journal, where he currently writes the Main Street column and holds an executive position at the publication’s parent company. Two days following the 2023 Monterey Park Shooting, on January 23, 2023, McGurn authored an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal opinion section headlined “Are There “Too Many Asians”?” The title garnered backlash from the public due to the apparent racism and insensitivity of the choice of words.
The article was later retitled “China and the Population Bomb That Wasn’t” in reaction. The article criticized the long-term Western policies and viewpoints that were crucial in shaping the Chinese “one child” policy, in spite of the public’s outcry over the title. The article’s conclusion bemoaned the fact that it took 50 years for people to realize the dangers that such a program posed.
