Before working for CNN, he worked in newsrooms all over the United States for almost 15 years. He first worked as a student writer in Connecticut. After that, he went to Missouri, Texas, and Colorado.

In 2018, he won Best Single News Story at the Asian Academy Creative Awards for his work on the story of how the remote North Korean nuclear test site Punggye-ri was destroyed. A Heartland Regional Emmy award and four Regional Edward R. Murrow awards are also among the awards he has won. The Steve Pieringer Award was given to him by the Texas Association of Broadcasters for bravery in the news. He went to school at the University of Missouri–Columbia and graduated from the School of Journalism.
