Tom Steinfort Career
For the past 20 years, Tom has reported on the biggest stories in Australia and throughout the world; during the course of his incredible career, he has reported from more than 50 nations. Australia’s Foreign Correspondent of the Year was just awarded to him. Tom, a Melbourne native, attended RMIT University to study journalism before starting work at WIN News in Ballarat in 2004. In 2006, Tom went on to work for Nine News in Melbourne. He received recognition for his coverage of multiple significant topics, such as the devastating Black Saturday bushfires, when he was nominated for a Walkley Award and won the Melbourne Press Club’s Young Journalist of the Year Award.
Tom relocated to Sydney in 2010 in order to work on A Current Affair. He was a part of the Logie-nominated inquiry into Robert Hughes’s alleged sexual assault on the Hey Dad set, which resulted in the actor serving a ten-year sentence. His on-the-ground reporting during the 2011 tsunami crisis in Japan led to a nomination for a Walkley Award. He experienced both the horrific Christchurch earthquake and the Queensland floods that same year. Tom returned to Nine News in 2012. He was a member of Channel Nine’s Logie Award-winning coverage of the 2013 NSW wildfire crisis, reporting from the front lines.
In early 2015, Tom started working as Channel Nine’s Europe Correspondent at what would turn out to be a very difficult period for the continent. As terrorism shook the continent, many countries experienced their worst attacks since World War II, with horrors occurring in Paris, Nice, Brussels, London, Munich, Tunisia, and Egypt. Along with covering significant events, he also covered the shock of Brexit, the earthquakes in Italy, and the initial finding of the missing plane’s parts on the isolated island of Reunion.
Tom has previously worked for the network a number of times in its US Bureau, where he covered high-profile stories like Michael Jackson’s unexpected death and accompanied Donald Trump on the campaign trail as he swept to victory in the 2016 election. Tom joined the TODAY team in 2019 after returning to Sydney in 2017 to co-host Weekend TODAY. The most noteworthy, though, has probably been his tenure on 60 Minutes. Tom made his first appearance on the show as a guest in 2015 after being granted unheard-of access to North Korean cinema.
He has reported from some of the most unstable areas in the world, such as Afghanistan, Taiwan, and Ukraine since he became a permanent member of the program. In 2022, he was awarded the Kennedy Award for Foreign Correspondent of the Year. Tom loves sports tremendously, and over the years, reporting from multiple Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups has been one of his favorite assignments. Although he has run the marathons in New York and Melbourne, his favorite sporting memory is unquestionably being present when his hometown Richmond ended its 37-year premiership drought in 2017.

Daniel, Steinfort’s brother, and Emma West, his sister-in-law, work as doctors in the hospital that had been seriously impacted by COVID-19. Medical professionals, nurses, and other healthcare workers were catching the coronavirus at a startling pace when one of the doctors was overrun by the second wave. For Steinfort, this was one of the most difficult stories to cover. Like many frontline workers, Daniel and Emma had four children at home, so once they got away from the demands of the hospital wards, they had to deal with the typical strains and hardships of family life. Their children needed to be comforted since they were afraid of what would happen if their parents became ill.
