Brooks studied business management and earned her Illinois real estate broker license after graduating from North Chicago Community High School. Following graduation from college, she started working as a multifamily residential property manager and stager of model homes. In 2007, Brooks founded You and Your Decor, an interior design firm with locations in Milwaukee and Chicago, following a bet loss to a coworker. She was chosen to compete in the 2013 season of Design Star, a television program that selected the host of a new show for the HGTV cable network. Upon winning after seven episodes, Brooks took over as host of The Most Embarrassing Rooms in America, a show that ran for a mere four episodes. In order to transform the houses that the network deemed to be the most embarrassing, Brooks teamed up with DIY Network carpenter Jeff Devlin (I Hate My Bath) during the season.

Since then, Brooks’s work has been featured in HGTV, Essence, Uptown, Chicago (Interiors), and Luxury magazines. She frequently appears in public and gives design demos for WGN, ABC, and WCIU in Chicago. She collaborated with designer David Bromstad on the Rock the Block season two on HGTV. In addition, she is the host of HGTV’s $50k Three Ways and the creator and presenter of Smart Home, the network’s sweepstakes program. Her first appearance on the 2021 AD100 list of designers and architects was in Architectural Digest. LeBron James is among the celebrities she designs for.
