Ted Chen is an American Emmy award-winning general assignment reporter who is currently working at KNBC. He serves as the 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m reporter. In addition, he joined the station in 1995. 

Ted Chen Career

He has reported on a number of major news stories. In 2008, he covered the year’s Summer Olympics in Beijing China, reporting live on the gold-medal winning accomplishments of Team USA, and the impact of economic transformation in a country of more than one billion people.

Furthermore,  he has covered elections for more than 20 years. He traveled with then Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn in 2002 on his historic economic development trip to Asia and filed live reports from South Korea, Beijing, China, and Seoul. Additionally, he covered the Scott Peterson trial in Redwood City, California in 2004 and 2005.

Before he joined the NBC4  news team, he worked in San Diego at KGTV where he served as a general assignment reporter and substitute anchor for the weekday morning and weekend newscasts. Furthermore, while he was at KGTV, he covered significant events such as the Malibu firestorms, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the assassination of Mexico’s presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio.

He also worked at KSEE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Fresno, California where he served as a general assignment reporter and substitute weekend anchor. Additionally, he also worked at KRNV-TV in Reno, Nevada where he also served as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. He provided extensive coverage of major stories including the Oakland firestorms while he worked at KRNV-TV.

In his career as a journalist, he has been awarded an Emmy award,  two Golden Mike awards for his reporting, anchoring, and hosting NBC4 specials. In addition, he was honored by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism’s Workshop on Journalism, Race & Ethnicity for his series of news stories on Asian Americans in 2002.

For his story on “Area 51,” the top-secret military base in Southern Nevada used for testing highly sensitive military aircraft, in 1995 he received a San Diego Press Club award. Furthermore, he is a member of the advisory board of the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles, as well as The Asian Youth Center in San Gabriel, and regularly serves as master of ceremonies for many community events in Los Angeles and throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

He attended the University of California at Los Angeles and also the University of California in San Diego where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
