Steve Inskeep Biography

Steve Inskeep is an American anchor working for NPR as a host of Morning Edition and the morning news podcast Up First. He joined the NPR news team in 1996, after previously working for WMKY-FM.

Steve Inskeep Career

Inskeep graduated from Carmel High School and later on graduated in 1990 Phi Kappa Phi from Morehead State University, Morehead Kentucky. He then began his professional career at WMKY-FM in Morehead in a stint as a sportscaster. In 1996 NPR hired him and his first full-time assignment was the 1996 presidential primary in New Hampshire. Prior to being host of Morning Edition, Inskeep covered the Pentagon, the 2000 presidential campaign of George W. Bush, the U.S. Senate, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and was host of Weekend All Things Considered. Additionally, he has been the host of Morning Edition since 2004.

In January 2022, Inskeep interviewed former U.S. President Donald Trump on many issues including COVID-19 Vaccinations; the 2020 presidential elections; and the future of the Republican Party, specifically in the 2022 midterm elections. When Inskeep pressured Trump with questions related to the attempts to overturn the election results and the 2021 United States Capitol Attack, Trump suddenly hung up the phone interview.

Some of his notable works include; the Oil Money Divides Nigeria in 2005 where he received a 2006 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award with other members of NPR, the Transcript: Obama’s Full Interview With NPR, Ahmadinejad: Holocaust ‘Opinion Of Just A Few’, Along The Grand Trunk Road: Coming Of Age In India And Pakistan among others. He has been a guest on numerous TV programs including ABC’s This Week, NBC’s Meet the Press, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports, CNN’s Inside Politics, and the PBS Newshour

Furthermore, he is the author of Instant City: Life and Death in Karachi, a 2011 book on one of the world’s great mega-cities. He is also the author of Jacksonland, a history of President Andrew Jackson’s long-running conflict with John Ross, a Cherokee chief who resisted the removal of Indians from the eastern United States in the 1830s. In addition, he has written for publications including The New York Times, Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic.
