Sandra Ali Biography

Sandra Ali is an American anchor and reporter working for CBS Detroit as a weekday morning co-anchor from 5 am to 7 am alongside Kris Laudien.

Ali was born in New York City and later on, she was brought up in Egypt for her early childhood days before her family migrated to the United States. She attended Syracuse University’s prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Journalism where she graduated summa cum laude while she was 20 years old. Sandra then studied at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism where she earned her master’s degree in journalism.

After having completed her education, Sandra secured her first television job in Altoona Pennsylvania at WTAJ where she worked for two years. Later on, Ali relocated to the Motor City where she served as an anchor of the top-rated weekend editions of “Fox 2 News at 6” and “Fox 2 News at 10” as well as a reporter for Fox 2 News. In addition, she has made a number of regular network appearances on CNN Headline News, CNN, and Fox News channels.

Over the years, Ali has won a number of awards and in 2002, she won the Associated Press award for Best Hard News Reporter. In 2003, she was awarded an Association of Broadcasters award for Best Breaking News Reporter. Furthermore, she has secured major interviews including; with the Queen of Jordan, then Secretary of State Colin Powell, and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. In August 2004, Sandra relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio where she joined NBC affiliate WLWT. While she was at WLWT, she served as a main anchor for the 5, 6, and 11 p.m. newscasts for six years.

Together with her family, they later relocated back to Detroit where she worked at NBC affiliate, WDIV and spent 13 years at the station while serving as the 6 and 11 pm weekend anchor. Ali would also substitute on weekdays and also served as a franchise reporter on the station’s special projects unit. In addition, while Sandra worked at WDIV, she covered a number of major national stories such as the Washington DC demonstrations in 2018 after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. She also covered the students from metro Detroit who traveled to support children who survived the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in 2022.

During Ali’s free time, she enjoys volunteering at her children’s school, playing games with her children, reading, traveling, working out, and spending as much time as she can with her family and friends. Sandra has run the Detroit half marathon, twice!
