Sam Kiley Biography

Sam Kiley is an American anchor and reporter working for CNN as a Senior International Correspondent. He joined the CNN news team in January 2018, after previously working for Sky News.

Sam Kiley Career

Kiley joined the Gurkhas Regiment of the British Army after he graduated from Eastbourne College but before going to Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford. He quit the Army in the middle of his first year of college. Kiley started working as an education writer for The Times in 1987. After three years, he became a US West Coast reporter for The Sunday Times. The next year, he went to Nairobi to become The Times’ Africa correspondent. From there, he covered Somalia, Zaire, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone, which got him a lot of praise.

Kiley won the Granada Television Foreign Correspondent of the Year award in 1996 for his coverage of the fall of President Mobutu’s government in Zaire. He then moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, when he was made head of The Times’ Africa bureau. During a coup attempt in Lesotho in 1998, he was shot. In 1999, Kiley went to Jerusalem and became the Middle East bureau chief for The Times. He did this job for two years before resigning because of a disagreement with his editors. Kiley was able to find and talk to the Israeli forces who killed Mohammed al-Durrah, the 12-year-old boy who became a symbol of the intifada after his death. The last straw for Kiley was being told to file his piece “without mentioning the dead kid.”

His first job was as a foreign reporter for the London Evening Standard newspaper, where he was based in London. He covered the wars in Afghanistan and the Second Intifada in the Palestinian Territories. Kiley hosted “Truth and Lies in Baghdad” in 2002 as part of Channel 4’s main current events show Dispatches. After that, he worked full-time for the station and made many more shows for Dispatches and Unreported World. For both of those shows, he traveled all over the world.

While covering Channel 4’s coverage of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, he was abducted along with his Iraqi helpers and cameraman Nick Hughes. They were taken into the desert and almost killed, but an apparent mistake kept them from being killed. In 2005, Kiley made two shows for Sky One: USA Unsolved with Sam Kiley and Guns for Hire. Guns for Hire was a study into modern mercenaries working in Afghanistan and Congo.

In November 2006, Kiley made an observational documentary for BBC2 called “The General’s War” about life in Afghanistan. For it, he was given special, never-before-seen access to British NATO General David Richards. He went back to Channel 4 and made movies in Russia, Kosovo, Cape Town, the Congo, and the Palestinian Territories. Kiley has worked for Sky News since November 2010. He started as a security editor and then became a defense and security editor in 2012. In November 2012, he became Sky News’ Middle East reporter and is based in Jerusalem. A cameraman for Kiley named Mick Deane was shot and killed in Cairo on August 14, 2013. Kiley was working with him and writing about the trouble in the Middle East at the time.
