Rosalynn Carter Biography

Rosalynn Carter was an American activist and writer who was the former First Lady of the United States of America. She served as First Lady from 1977 to 1981 as the wife of President Jimmy Carter.

Carter was the oldest of four offspring of Wilburn Edgar Smith, a technician, transport driver, and rancher, Frances Allethea “Allie” Murray Smith, an instructor, dressmaker, and mailman. Her siblings were William Jerrold “Jerry” Smith (1929-2003), a designer, and Murray Lee Smith (1932-2003), an instructor and priest.

In addition, her sister, Lillian Allethea (Smith) Wall (conceived 1936), known as Allethea, named for her mom and for Lillian Gordy Carter (Smith and Carter families being companions, is a land intermediary. Rosalynn was named after Rosa Wise Murray, her maternal grandma. Smith’s terrific uncle W.S. Shrewd was one of the American Brazilians known as Confederados who emigrated from the US to Brazil after the Nationwide conflict. Furthermore, her father passed away in 1940, after suffering from leukemia.

Carter was married to former United States President, Jimmy Carter who she dated in 1945. They dated while he attended the US Maritime Foundation at Annapolis, and she gained interest in him after seeing an image of him in his Annapolis uniform. In addition, Rosalynn and Jimmy tied the knot in February 1946, after she relocated to Annapolis with his folks. On July 7, 1946, they wedded in Fields.

Carter and her husband Jimmy were blessed with four children in their union. They had a son, John William in 1947, James Lord “Chip” III in 1950, Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” in 1952, and Amy Lynn who was born in 1967.

Rosalynn Carter Death / Health

Carter went for surgery in April 1977 where she had a breast tumor removed. Later in August 1977, she was treated at Bethesda Naval Hospital where she underwent a gynecological procedure. In addition, in May 2023, the Carter Center diagnosed her with dementia and she was later admitted to hospice care on November 17, 2023.
