Robert Johnson Biography
Robert Johnson is an American meteorologist working for ABC 11 seen on Monday through Wednesday at 4 pm and on weekend evenings. He joined the ABC 11 weather team in February 2020.
Robert Johnson Career
Philadelphia is where Johnson was born and brought up, and he desired to become a meteorologist since he was two years old. While Robert was in 4th grade, he was featured in a PBS Kids commercial that spotlighted his love for broadcasting. He attended Penn State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science with a concentration in weather forecasting and communication in 2019. In addition, Robert also holds a minor in Energy Business & Finance.
The American Meteorological Society awarded Johnson the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) in January 2023, which is the highest seal a meteorologist can have. While he was at Penn State University, he was actively involved in the Centre County Report, as the weathercaster. Centre County Report is the university’s Emmy-award-winning student newscast. In addition, while Johnson worked on the station the Broadcast Education Association awarded him “Best Student TV Weathercaster” for covering the 2017 hurricane season.
Robert was elected to Penn State Meteorology’s Campus Weather Service as its Vice President. The Penn State Meteorology’s Campus Weather Service is the largest student-run forecasting organization in the country. While he served as vice president, he served as Executive Producer for CWS’ live broadcast coverage of major storms. He also served as the manager of the club’s massive social media presence. Furthermore, Johnson has also worked for the PBS public affairs program “Digging Deeper” as the student host for two years alongside Penn State President Dr. Eric Barron.
While he was the host of Digging Deeper, he assisted the WPSU station in winning a Mid-Atlantic EMMY award for Overall Station Excellence. Robert interned at WTXF-TV in Philadelphia and WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. A number of his most impactful moments were when he served as the host of 46 LIVE, which is the official live stream for the Penn State Dance Marathon. Furthermore, Robert is actively involved in the community, and as of the moment, he is the Communications Chair for the Penn State Alumni Association’s Triangle Chapter. During his leisure time, he enjoys; exploring new coffee shops and listening to music.
