Stevenson graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, where she experienced spring tornadoes and winter blizzards. She then moved to Mississippi State University to pursue a three-year meteorology certification in Geological and Earth Sciences. Later on, she continued her education towards a second Bachelor of Science degree.
Her upbringing took place in Pensacola, Florida, shaping her with a profound appreciation for hurricanes, tropical depressions, and the challenges of high humidity. Some of her early experiences involved tracking hurricanes on a map, anticipating the arrival of destructive winds and heavy rainfall, and laying the groundwork for her future education in meteorology. She vividly recalls waiting in lines with neighbors, enduring the high humidity and heat, to secure fresh batteries and water in preparation for the storms. Power outages lasting up to a week were not uncommon, as the city worked to recover from the aftermath of these devastating weather events.
After relocating to Seattle and working a temporary job on the 27th floor of the old Seafirst building, she encountered the Inauguration Day Windstorm of 1993. Despite the strong winds, the building’s architecture performed as designed, swaying back and forth, altering the skyline view from the tall windows, shifting from east to west. In February 2001, while concluding a weather report on Northwest Cable News, she experienced the onset of the Nisqually earthquake.
She has also been present for the last three record-breaking all-time high temperatures recorded at Sea-Tac. The first instance occurred in 1994 at 100 degrees, followed by 103 in 2009, and the all-time high of 108 degrees in 2021. Throughout her career, she has navigated numerous snowstorms, windstorms, and river flooding events, refining her ability to provide crucial weather forecasts. These forecasts not only assist Western Washington residents in planning their day but also in preparing for upcoming weather events.
Stevenson has expanded her presence to KOMO and has been featured on various local channels. She has certainly made her mark across different media outlets, showcasing her versatility and widespread influence.
