In the movie, Leto’s concubine Lady Jessica is an acolyte of the Bene Gesserit, an all-female organization that seeks mysterious political goals and wields seemingly superhuman physical and mental abilities, such as the capacity to control their bodies down to the cellular level and determine the sex of their children. Although Jessica was told by the Bene Gesserit to bear a daughter as part of their breeding program, she gave birth to a son, Paul, who was raised by Leto’s bodyguards, the elite soldiers Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck.

Paul has received training in political scheming from Thufir Hawat, the Duke’s Mentat—human computers with the capacity to store enormous volumes of data and carry out sophisticated computations whenever needed. Additionally, Jessica has taught her kid the Bene Gesserit disciplines. Jessica’s boss, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, is intrigued by Paul’s prophetic dreams. She puts Paul through a lethal experiment. As he pulls his hand away from a box, she will be ready to strike him with a poisoned needle (the gom jabbar), which induces excruciating pain through nerve induction but does no physical harm. In order to ensure that Paul’s human qualities can triumph over his animal impulses, this test will see how long he can bear the pain without succumbing to the needle’s tip. More suffering than any girl who has ever been put through the test, Paul passes away.

Leto, Jessica, and Paul travel with their household to occupy Arrakeen, the capital on Arrakis that was once held by House Harkonnen. Leto discovers that harvesting the spice, which is protected by giant sandworms, is dangerous, so he tries to negotiate with the native Fremen people of the planet, viewing them as valuable allies rather than enemies. Soon after the Atreides’ arrival, Harkonnen forces attack, accompanied by the Emperor’s fierce Sardaukar troops in disguise. Leto is betrayed by his personal physician, the Suk doctor Wellington Yueh, who delivers a drugged Leto to the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his twisted Mentat, Piter De Vries. Yueh, however, arranges for Jessica and Paul to escape into the desert, where the Harkonnens assume they have died.

In an attempt to help Leto kill the Baron during their meeting, Yueh swaps out one of Leto’s teeth with a poison gas capsule. The gas kills Leto, De Vries, and everyone else in the room, but the Baron barely escapes it thanks to his shield.
