Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Chapman University. Additionally, he pursued studies in broadcast meteorology and atmospheric sciences at Mississippi State University. Furthermore, he holds an FAA license as a drone pilot, showcasing a diverse skill set that includes expertise in journalism, meteorology, and unmanned aerial vehicle operation. He then began his professional on-air television career at KIEM, in Eureka, California, where he anchored weeknights at 6:00 and 11:00.

Before joining the news scene in San Diego, he served as an anchor and reporter at KSEE in Fresno, California. During his time in Fresno, he conducted an exclusive investigation into a U.S. Army veteran who was facing life in a Mexican prison on weapons charges. He went above and beyond by traveling to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to interview the veteran incarcerated in the notorious Cereso Prison. Through more than a dozen reports that highlighted the case, a Mexican magistrate eventually dropped the charges, leading to the release of the veteran.

He ended up receiving credit from U.S. Consulate officials for his role in saving the veteran’s life through his impactful reporting. Additionally, he played a crucial role as the first journalist to break the news of the disappearance of San Diego teenager Chelsea King. He collaborated closely with Chelsea’s mother, providing live reports to aid in finding the missing teen alive. Tragically, when Chelsea was discovered murdered along a San Diego trail, he continued his dedicated investigative reporting.

He uncovered and broke details about her murderer, ultimately contributing to the conviction of the perpetrator. This reporting during this difficult time played a significant role in bringing justice to Chelsea King’s case. Phillips anchored weekend evenings at KGTV in San Diego before his time in Phoenix. His weekend team at KGTV earned four Emmy Awards for “Best Weekend Evening Newscast.”

During the ISIS takeover of Mosul, Iraq, he conducted a series of exclusive investigative news reports focusing on Assyrian Christian refugees who had fled to San Diego, leaving their families in the Middle East. Additionally, he has reported from the front lines of multiple devastating wildfires and from inside prisons and jails throughout California. Furthermore, he has been a staunch advocate for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivors, utilizing in-depth reports and emceeing numerous events to raise awareness and support for this cause.
