Phyllis Smith is an American Emmy-award-winning actress and comedian best known for starring in Inside Out (2015), The OA (2016), and Bad Teacher (2011). She rose to fame after starring in the TV series The Office (2005-2013).
Smith earned a degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri–St. Louis in 1972. She performed as a burlesque artist, dancer, and cheerleader for the St. Louis Cardinals football team during the 1970s and 1980s. There was, she claimed, “no stripping, but I did wear feathers.” She had a knee ailment that required her to give up dancing. After that, Smith worked for just three hours as a telemarketer before quitting. Later on, she worked as a casting and acting professional in Hollywood, California. Smith appeared in the movie Caddyshack as an extra for the first time for pay.
Smith was employed by Allison Jones as a casting associate for the TV show The Office when she received an opportunity to play Phyllis Lapin, a soft-spoken saleswoman who frequently disagreed with haughty office boss Michael Scott.
