Patrick Oppmann Biography
Patrick Oppmann is an American anchor and reporter working for CNN as a news correspondent. He joined the CNN news team in August 2000, after previously working for BBC News.

Oppmann is CNN’s Havana-based correspondent, which means she covers Cuba and the surrounding area for all of the network’s platforms. In addition to writing stories, Oppmann often films and edits them. He speaks Spanish very well and has been all over Latin America. Oppmann most recently reported from the Bahamas on Hurricane Dorian. He spent several days on Grand Bahama before, during, and after the Category 5 storm did terrible damage to the islands. Oppmann helped CNN cover Storm Irma, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Wilma. He was also very important in covering Hurricane Maria, which was the strongest storm to ever hit land in the Bahamas.
This year, Oppmann also reported on the shooting of Red Sox legend David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic, spending many days in Santo Domingo covering the police investigation that followed. He also reported on the Trump administration’s ban on US cruise ships going to Cuba, seeing the last US cruise ship leave Cuba from the port of Havana. After dozens of diplomatic staff and the strange illnesses of dozens of US and Canadian diplomatic staff in Cuba, which some US officials at first thought were caused by “sonic attacks.”
Oppmann was the only reporter for a U.S. TV network that was in Cuba on December 17, 2014, when the historic news came out that the U.S. government would change its policy toward Cuba and try to restore full diplomatic links with the island’s communist government. Oppmann broke the news that, as part of the policy change, the U.S. government secretly helped a Cuban spy serving life in a U.S. federal prison get his wife pregnant through artificial insemination while she was still living in Cuba.
Oppmann was also the first reporter to talk to and film Cuban doctors getting ready to fight the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. He found the Hakken family in Cuba after they had sailed there during a custody battle. He was following the movements of a couple on the run who had taken their kids from Florida in 2013. Later, Cuban officials brought the couple back to the U.S. and found them guilty of theft. In the same year, Oppmann was the only person who could go to a hospital in Cuba that was dealing with the island’s first cholera outbreak in more than one hundred years.
In 2010, Oppmann spent weeks reporting from the rural site where 33 Chilean miners were being desperately tried to be freed. During that job, Oppmann regularly broke news about how the rescue effort was going. He was also one of the first reporters to talk to some of the miners after they were safely pulled out of the mine. Oppmann also helped CNN win a Peabody Award for its coverage of the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. He spent weeks going from Louisiana to Florida to report on how the oil affected people living in the area.
Oppmann started working for CNN as an assignment editor in 2000. He quickly moved up and became a field reporter in the Miami Bureau. He wrote about many different topics while he was in Miami, such as the space shuttle Columbia’s loss, the effects of Hurricane Katrina, and the investigation into the September 11 attacks. After moving to the Seattle bureau in 2009, he covered several stories for all CNN channels. Aside from National Public Radio, Oppmann’s work has been in The Christian Science Monitor. He has also worked for the St. Petersburg Times, The Buenos Aires Herald, TIME Magazine, and more. Duke University is where he got his degree. His major was Spanish and Latin American studies.
