Newton Jones Burkett is an American Correspondent working for WABC-TV where he covers metropolitan New York. He joined the WABC-TV team in July 1989, after previously working for WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jones has added a unique dimension to WABC-TV’s coverage of metropolitan New York, with his distinctive production skills, storytelling, and award-winning international reporting. Over the years, Newton has reported on everything from; race relations, aviation disasters, police misconduct, natural disasters, crime and politics, war, and diploma. In addition, Burkett covered the war in Iraq in 2003, for almost three months and he also covered the military build-up that came after.

Furthermore, Newton has also covered the terrorist bombings in London in 2005, and Madrid in 2004. He also covered the war between the Israeli-Hamas War in Gaza from 2009 to 2010, and Israel and Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon in 2006. In 2004, Burkett covered the death of Palestinian leader, Yasir Arafat and three Israeli national elections. He witnessed the 2005 historic Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and he chronicled the Palestinian popular uprising. In addition, Newton was among the first of his colleagues who reported from Haiti in 2010, after an earthquake struck the area.

During the historic 9.0 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident in Japan in 2011, Burkett was the only local New York television news correspondent to report from the area. While working for WABC-TV in New York, Jones has reported on many big stories. A number of the stories he has reported include; the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Superstorm Sandy to the crash of TWA Flight 800, and landmark police misconduct trials. Furthermore, during the winter of 2001, Burkett did an undercover report for a number of weeks in the guise of being a homeless man. He did the report after many homeless New Yorkers complained that the city’s municipal shelters were unsafe.

In addition, Newton’s work as a correspondent has been honored with a number of prestigious awards in American television news. The Radio Television Digital News Association (formerly the RTNDA) awarded Burkett with two Edward R. Murrow Awards. He has also received 4 Emmy awards inclusive of a 2003 and 2007, Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Achievement, and he received 15 Emmy Nominations. For reporting on the September 11th terrorist attacks, N.J received the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award and the George Foster Peabody Award together with his colleagues at ABC News. Furthermore, for his significant contributions to the field of broadcasting, Montclair State University presented Newton with the Allen B. DuMont Broadcaster of the Year Award in 2008.

He is also the First Vice Chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In the past, he served as the president of the Academy’s flagship chapter in New York. Prior to joining the WABC-TV team, Jones worked for WFSB-TV, the CBS station in Hartford, Connecticut where he served as a correspondent from 1986-1989. Furthermore, Newton attended Columbia University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master’s in International Affairs.
