Mike Wankum Biography
Mike Wankum is an American meteorologist working for WCVB-TV as a weeknight meteorologist and weekday evening weather anchor at 4 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm, and 11 pm. He also serves as the meteorologist at The 10 O’Clock News on MeTV Boston.
Wankum joined WCVB-TV in December 2006, and he has served as a weather forecaster in Boston for almost thirty years. Before joining WCVB, he worked at Boston’s WLVI where he served as a chief meteorologist for 13 years. Prior to relocating to Boston, Mike worked in Richmond, Virginia at WTVR where he served as the chief meteorologist and also at KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa where he was the chief meteorologist.
Wankum has received 16 regional Emmy awards for his coverage of weather and technology. Many Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (MBA) and Associated Press awards have been awarded to him inclusive of a First Place MBA Sound Bites award for his weekly “Cutting Edge” technology series in 2018. In addition, Mike was listed as one of the seven “Coolest” meteorologists in the country by the Washington Post in 2017.
Over the years, he has been a guest science lecturer atschools and universities. During his lectures, he as spoken on a wide range of topics including; severe weather, climate change, children’s issues, media, and nuclear disasters. In addition, he has served as a former Chairman of the Chernobyl Children Project USA, and he is actively involved in a number of local charity organizations.
Mike graduated from Briar Cliff University and also attended Creighton University where he earned a Masters in Atmospheric Science. Furthermore, Wankum is a member of the American Meteorological Society and he earned is Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation. During his spare time, he enjoys spending as much time as he can with his family.
