Michael Usher Biography
Michael Usher is an Australian anchor and reporter working for 7News as the anchor of the Friday and Saturday news and host of The Latest a position he took up in December 2018. He joined Seven Network in October 2016, as a weekend presenter on Seven News Sydney.
Michael Usher Education
Usher attended All Saints’ College where he graduated in 1987, and later in 1989, he joined the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts where he studied media and graduated with an Associate Diploma in Media Studies.
Michael Usher Nine Network
He started his television career at the Golden West Television Network, Bunbury in 1990, while serving as a final-year cadet journalist. Not long after, he was posted in Kalgoorlie before he later joined STW-9, Perth a year later. Usher relocated to Sydney in 1993, where he worked at TCN-9 news, and 3 years later, he was appointed at Nine Network as the Olympics reporter covering the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. In addition, he covered the corruption scandal that engulfed the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne.
When the Twin Towers were attacked in September 2001, Michael was the Nine Network’s New York correspondent. He also traveled north from Kuwait to reach Baghdad the day after the Coalition seized the city. He worked for three years for the Nine Network’s US bureau from 2001, as the National Nine News US correspondent, based in Los Angeles. Usher then relocated to Australia where he served as the fill-in host of Today and later in 2004, he relocated to United Kingdon with his family where he covered the London bureau.
Furthermore, in 2006, he returned to Australia where he replaced Ellen Fanning as the presenter of Nightline, and later in 2007, he was promoted to serving as the anchor of the Sunday program. Usher was then appointed as the anchor of Nine News Sunday AM which was short-lived and in 2008, he also served as the fill-in anchor on a number of Nine News bulletins as well as reporting for 60 Minutes. In addition, he served as the anchor of the weekend bulletin of Nine News Sydney for a year, and later on, he was permanently appointed as the reporter for 60 Minutes.
Michael also served as the host of the first leader’s debate between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard before the 2010 Australian Federal Election. He anchored A Current Affair in December of 2010, while fill-in presenter Leila McKinnon had a holiday. In addition, he served as the co-host of the 2010 New Year’s Eve Fireworks with Alicia Gorey. while Karl Stefanovic was off-air for a while, he filled in for him in December 2011. After having worked at the station for 25 years, he decided to leave the station in 2016.

While working for 7NEWS, he has covered; the Manchester concert bombing, the 2017 Queensland Election, the Christchurch and London attacks, the wedding of Harry and Meghan, the Trump election, and the release of Schapelle Corby from Kerobokan prison. Michael also led the station’s major investigation into the disappearance of the Beaumont children. In addition, he is considered one of the country’s foremost investigative journalists, and he is an award-winning reporter, newsreader, and foreign correspondent with a journalism career of almost 30 years.
