Micah Materre Biography
Micah Materre is an American Emmy award-winning anchor working for WGN-TV as an evening anchor at 5 pm, 6 pm, 9 pm, and 10 pm. She joined the WGN-TV team in January 1998, as a morning co-anchor and medical reporter.
Before Materre took up her current position, she served as the co-anchor of the midday newscast from January 2003 to October 2009. While working for WGN-TV she has covered entertainment news and special assignment stories such as the historic inauguration of America’s first black President. Materre also serves as the reporter and co-producer of “Chicago’s Very Own and as host of People to People, which is a public affairs program on WGN.
Chicago is where Micah was born and brought up. She worked at WJBK-TV in Detroit for 8 years and while she was at the station, she served as a main anchor and general assignment reporter. While she was at the station, she earned many awards and accolades such as an Emmy award presented to her from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
Before Micah relocated to the Motor City, she worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she served as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter. In 1983, she started her broadcasting career at NPR affiliate, WBEZ radio in Chicago where she served as a reporter and producer for four years. Furthermore, she has lectured radio production classes at Columbia College. Materre has served as a journalist and broadcaster for over three dacades.
In addition, Materre was awarded a Chicago/Midwest Emmy in 2014, and honored by Barnes and Thornburg LLP as diversity trailblazer. Over the years, Micah has been featured in a number of local and national publications such as; Good Housekeeping, Michigan Avenue Magazine, Glamour, RedEye, New York Times Magazine, ‘Who’s Who’ in Black Chicago, Ebony, and Today’s Chicago Woman.
Over the years, Micah has served as a mistress of ceremonies, commentator, and honorary chairperson to a number of community and civic organizations across Chicago. She serves on Tutoring Chicago’s Advisory Board and is on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Children’s Choir. Furthermore, Materre is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, the civic organization, the National Association of Black Journalists, and Incorporated.
