Melanie Newman is an American radio and television play-by-play announcer working for MLB Network. She joined the MLB broadcast team in 2020, after previously working for Salem Red SoxSalem.
Melanie Newman Career
Newman pursued her broadcast journalism at Troy University and graduated in 2013. It was while in school that she started her career in broadcasting. She called softball and baseball games in addition to serving as the play-by-play announcer for Troy’s volleyball team. She spent many years as a Minor League Baseball game caller, working at both High-A and Double-A levels. In addition to being the play-by-play announcer for the Frisco RoughRiders, Newman was a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Southwest. She worked as a play-by-play broadcaster for the Salem Red Sox in 2019 and joined Suzie Cool to form the first all-female broadcast team in professional baseball.
Newman joined the MLB broadcast staff in 2020. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic delaying the MLB season, she debuted on August 4, 2020, making history as the first female caller of an Orioles regular season game while working as a radio broadcaster. In addition, Newman worked as a studio host and sideline reporter for Orioles TV shows. On July 20, 2021, Newman called the Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays game for YouTube as the play-by-play announcer for the first all-female broadcast team.
On September 29, 2021, Newman alongside Jessica Mendoza, called an ESPN game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, which was the first MLB game to be called by an all-female broadcast team that was broadcast nationally. Moreover, Newman called plays for Apple TV+ Friday Night Baseball during the 2022 MLB season. Newman was amongst the three commentators for the BBC when the MLB’s London Series took place in 2023.
