Matthew Smith is an American veteran reporter/anchor working for FOX13 Seattle where he serves as a weekday and weekend anchor and reporter. He joined the Q13 team in November 2021, after previously working at KIRO 7.
Michigan is his native home and he gained an interest in journalism at a young age when he interned at a television station when he was 17 years old. In 2005, he joined the University of Michigan-Flint where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in communication and media Studies in 2008. Prior to relocating to Seattle with his wife, he resided and worked in; Texas, Michigan, West Virginia, and Nebraska. Over the years, Smith has received many awards for his on-camera and behind-camera work.
In addition, he is a self-professed nerd who enjoys talking about the environment and climate. The University of Rhode Island named Smith as a Metcalf Fellow in 2021. His work has focused on the increase in PFAS/PFOA contaminations, the Flint water crisis, air quality concerns in Washington, and salmon recovery. Furthermore, he has made appearances on national news programs where he reported on wildfires and hurricanes, however, he states that his favorite stories are those that he gets to talk bout his community.
During his free time, he enjoys exploring Washington, hiking, kayaking, reading a book, watching movies, crafting beer, training for a marathon, and sending as much time as he can with his family. he has run in a number of marathons so far and he is always trying to improve his time on each race. Matt has also competed in several eating competitions and at one time, he was dubbed the burrito king of West Virginia.
