Matthew Chance Biography
Matthew Chance is an American anchor working for CNN as a Chief Global Affairs Correspondent. He joined the CNN news team in 2001, after previously working as a freelance journalist based in Asia.

Chance is CNN’s chief correspondent for global news. He has spent more than 20 years covering big stories for CNN around the world, including from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Russia and Chechnya, Ukraine, Europe, and the Far East. He has interviewed many current and past world leaders, such as Vladimir Putin of Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, and Pervez Musharraf, who was President of Pakistan from 1999 to 2007.
Chance has written a lot about the war in Ukraine and usually reports from both Russia and Ukraine. In June 2023, Chance was reporting from Kyiv when Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the private defense company Wagner, called for a military coup against Putin. Then Chance went to Moscow to report on the failed protests against the Kremlin. Two months later, he wrote about Prigozhin’s death in a plane crash outside of Moscow. He went to the site of the crash, which had been bulldozed, and saw a makeshift tribute for the late Wagner chief.
In 2021, he reported about how thousands of people fleeing war-torn countries like Syria and Iraq were desperately trying to get into Poland. Chance stayed on the ground for several days and was the only person who could get into a homemade migrant camp at Bruzgi. He was even hit by a water cannon when fighting broke out along the border between Belarus and Poland.
Chance looked into a complicated intelligence sting operation that Ukraine used to get accused war criminals out of Russia so they could be brought to justice for crimes they committed in eastern Ukraine, where separatists backed by Moscow have been fighting for years. At first, Ukraine denied CNN’s story, but in the end, the country’s ruling party said it was a Ukrainian operation. Chance was a reporter who was held by Colonel Gaddafi’s men at the Rixos al Nasr hotel in Tripoli, Libya, in August 2011.
