Matthew Chance Biography

Matthew Chance is an American anchor working for CNN as a Chief Global Affairs Correspondent. He joined the CNN news team in 2001, after previously working as a freelance journalist based in Asia.

Matthew Chance Career

Chance is CNN’s chief correspondent for global news. He has spent more than 20 years covering big stories for CNN around the world, including from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Russia and Chechnya, Ukraine, Europe, and the Far East. He has interviewed many current and past world leaders, such as Vladimir Putin of Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, and Pervez Musharraf, who was President of Pakistan from 1999 to 2007.

Chance has written a lot about the war in Ukraine and usually reports from both Russia and Ukraine. Russian airstrikes around the Ukrainian city, of Kyiv, were the start of the invasion while he was reporting live on CNN from there. Chance then covered live as a fierce firefight broke out between Russian and Ukrainian forces at the Antonov airbase. He also saw the fallout of a fierce and deadly battle on the outskirts of Kyiv.

As Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian cities got worse, Chance got an exclusive interview with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, in his Kyiv cave. In April 2021, while on a tour of the front lines in Donbas, he talked to Zelensky and got exclusive access to the Ukrainian president as he warned that a Russian attack was very likely. The Overseas Press Club of America gave the network the David Kaplan Award earlier this year in part because of Chance’s reporting.

In June 2023, Chance was reporting from Kyiv when Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the private defense company Wagner, called for a military coup against Putin. Then Chance went to Moscow to report on the failed protests against the Kremlin. Two months later, he wrote about Prigozhin’s death in a plane crash outside of Moscow. He went to the site of the crash, which had been bulldozed, and saw a makeshift tribute for the late Wagner chief.

In 2021, he reported about how thousands of people fleeing war-torn countries like Syria and Iraq were desperately trying to get into Poland. Chance stayed on the ground for several days and was the only person who could get into a homemade migrant camp at Bruzgi. He was even hit by a water cannon when fighting broke out along the border between Belarus and Poland.

Chance looked into a complicated intelligence sting operation that Ukraine used to get accused war criminals out of Russia so they could be brought to justice for crimes they committed in eastern Ukraine, where separatists backed by Moscow have been fighting for years. At first, Ukraine denied CNN’s story, but in the end, the country’s ruling party said it was a Ukrainian operation. Chance was a reporter who was held by Colonel Gaddafi’s men at the Rixos al Nasr hotel in Tripoli, Libya, in August 2011. He kept posting on Twitter while he was being held, and he was live on CNN when the International Committee of the Red Cross finally freed the prisoners.

Chance was also in charge of CNN’s coverage of the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008, where he reported from the front lines. Chance and his team were the only TV reporters to cross from Georgia into Russia. They did this by reporting from Tskinvali, the war-torn city of South Ossetia. After the war was over, Chance got an exclusive interview with Vladimir Putin, the Russian Prime Minister. It was the first interview the network had had with a leader of a country in eight years. There was also a one-on-one talk between Chance and Dmitry Medvedev, the president of Russia.

Chance reported from Mumbai, India, on other jobs. There, he covered the attacks by militants on the city in 2008. Moreover, he covered the siege of the famous Taj Mahal Hotel. Chance reported from the scene of the July 2005 bombings in London and did in-depth stories on the terrorists who were guilty of the tragedy. He also wrote about the 2004 Tsunami disaster from Phuket, where he heard the heartbreaking stories of visitors from 27 countries who were caught in the disaster.

Chance wrote about the Beslan school siege in Russia in September 2004, during which 344 people died during a three-day standoff between Chechen rebels and Russian security forces. He also wrote about the Moscow theater hostage situation in October 2002, when Chechen rebels held about 800 people hostage. His reports showed that Russian special forces pumped deadly gas into the theater. They did this to knock out the hostage-takers before storming in. He has also been to Chechnya many times, where separatist fighters and Russian troops are still fighting a bitter war.

Chance did a lot of reporting from Iraq after the war in 2003 in the Middle East. He has spent months writing about the terrible things that happened on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He reported suicide attacks by Palestinians against Israelis to the effects of Israel’s military action in the occupied territories. When Israeli troops finally left Yasser Arafat’s home in Ramallah in May 2002, he was the first reporter to talk to the Palestinian leader. During May 2002, he also wrote about the Israeli siege of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. In 2005, he reported on Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. He also went back to the area in 2007. There, he covered the war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah from the front lines.

He was the first CNN reporter and one of the first Western reporters to get to Kabul. He walked into the Afghan capital. Then he wrote about how overwhelmed with feeling the people of Kabul were when the Taliban left.
