Matt Austin Biography
Matt Austin is an American reporter working for WVIT as a General Assignment Reporter on NBC Connecticut News at 11 p.m. He joined the WVIT news team in October 2014, after previously working for the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.
Austin graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Broadcast Journalism in 2003. He began his professional career at KFBB as a reporter and anchor and he helped re-launch the station’s website, including training team members. Additionally, he was awarded and received Montana’s top journalism honors, the EB Craney Award. In January 2008 he joined KRTV as a reporter and anchor where he gained national exposure for the station, including on CNN, through exclusive stories.
Moreover, he created, designed, and launched 1st ever special 4th of July fireworks program which involved moving an entire television broadcast from the studio to a remote location. WF FOX44 & WVNY ABC 22, Nexstar Broadcasting hired him as a reporter and anchor in 2009. Here, he handled high-profile projects requiring logistical planning, travel, and trust because of limited oversight. The trip to cover F-35s in Florida came in below budget and aired on stations across the country.
Prior to joining NBC Connecticut, he worked at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting as a Broadcast Media Instructor in 2021. His major achievement was working one-on-one with students to guide them through the course, refine their skills, and successfully accomplish objectives. In his free time, he loves spending time outside and traveling throughout the state, from the hills to the shore.
