As the primary author of several original articles outlining a surgical checklist, Dr. Makary later co-led the World Health Organization Safe Surgery Saves Lives campaign with Atul Gawande on behalf of the UN.

Dr. Makary, who was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, is now leading three national grants as the principal investigator. He has won various honors, including the Nobility in Science Award from the National Pancreas Foundation in 2015, which honors individuals for their exceptional contributions to pancreatic research and treatment. Most recently, HealthLeaders magazine named him one of the 20 most influential people in the United States in the field of health care.
