Marty Griffin is an American anchor and reporter working for KDKA-TV and KDKA-AM radio as a weekday morning at 9 a.m. to noon reporter and radio talk show. He joined the KDKA news team in 2003, after previously working for KXAS.
Marty Griffin Career
He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, attended Ohio University, and started his career as a journalist in Wichita Falls, Texas. Later, he relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he worked as an investigative reporter for NBC station KXAS. He went back to Pittsburgh in 2003 to work for KDKA Radio and KDKA-TV. Additionally, he co-hosts KDKA Radio’s The Inside Story with Marty Griffin.
He was convicted guilty of defiant trespass in 2005 by the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, following an investigation that purportedly revealed inadequate security at a bus garage owned by the Port Authority of Allegheny County. On the grounds of freedom of speech, that charge was dropped in 2006. The 60-year-old minister of Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, Brent Dugan, killed himself in a Mercer County hotel room in November 2006, following a confrontation with Griffin over his visit to an adult shop in the nearby McKeesport area.
Although he remained anonymous, Dugan appeared in television advertisements for the story, which KDKA decided not to show after discovering Dugan might have been a threat to himself. During a Q&A session in May 2020, he misgendered Dr. Rachel Levine, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health and the first openly transgender official in state history, multiple times. This led to him having to issue an apology on Twitter.
In addition to winning a Broadcast Achievement Award for an undercover report about Michael Irvin and the Dallas Cowboys, he has previously been the recipient of three prestigious Regional Emmys for Outstanding Investigative Reporting. At the 2008 Pittsburgh Achievement in Radio Awards, he was selected Pittsburgh’s Best Talk Show Host.
