Marty Gonzalez is an American anchor and reporter working for KRON 4 as a weekend anchor and reporter. He joined the KRON 4 news team in July 1996, after previously working for ABC7.
Marty Gonzalez Career
Gonzalez attended California State University at Chico, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. In 1993, he received a Kiplinger Fellowship Award and earned a Master’s degree in Journalism at Ohio State University. Gonzalez is an associate professor in the Broadcast and Electronic Communications Arts department at San Francisco State University.
Gonzalez was a general assignment reporter for KRON 4 until being designated weekend anchor in July 1996. Gonzalez led KGO-TV’s East Bay Bureau in San Francisco from 1988 to 1995. Before that, he was a general assignment reporter at Sacramento’s KCRA-TV. He produced and hosted KCRA’s monthly public affairs program “De Colores,” which examined Latino issues, from 1980 until 1987.
Gonzalez has traveled the world on assignment as a reporter. His work has taken him to Mexico City to cover the 1985 earthquake; Alaska to cover its 25th anniversary of statehood; Vatican City in Rome to profile Pope John Paul II; Houston and Florida to report on NASA; Central America to investigate the effects of anti-American sentiment during the early 1980s; and Los Angeles to cover the Northridge earthquake and Rodney King riots. He also completed documentaries and special reports from Cuba and China for KRON 4.
Gonzalez’s coverage of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake from the Oakland Cypress Structure helped KGO win a Peabody Award for its coverage of the event. Additionally, the Society of Professional Journalists has awarded him. During his leisure time, Gonzalez enjoys working out, traveling, photography, and reading.
