Preston has been all over the country for more than 20 years writing about the most important stories and big changes in U.S. politics, from the historic Bush v. Gore election to Barack Obama’s groundbreaking leadership and the rise of Donald Trump. Then, on January 6, 2021, there was an uprising in the U.S. Capitol, and Preston was there to report from there during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax attack that same year.
Preston has worked for the network in several editing and programming roles before being named to his current job in 2018. These included Political Director, Executive Editor of CNN Politics, and Executive Director of Political Programming. Preston started his job as a reporter in Georgia, where he covered many different topics, such as the death of Jon Benet Ramsey, the bombing of an abortion clinic in an area of Atlanta, and the fall of Newt Gingrich, who was Speaker of the U.S. House at the time. The Georgia Press Association and the Associated Press gave him Freedom of Information Awards for his work for the Marietta Daily Journal.
Before joining CNN, Preston was a senior staff writer for the Roll Call. There, he often broke important news about lawmakers’ political and policy decisions. This made other news outlets cite his newspaper a lot. He started as a reporter in Washington, D.C., working as a journalist for the States News Service. There he mostly wrote for newspapers in Massachusetts, Nevada, and Florida. Preston also led two political talk shows on SiriusXM POTUS 124 from 2016 to 2023. Moreover, Preston got a B.A. in history and journalism from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
