Marissa Mitchell is an American Emmy nominated-winning anchor and reporter who is currently working at FOX 5 DC. She serves as the anchor of the 4 a.m-6 a.m and 9 a.m-11 a.m news.
Marissa Mitchell Career
She previously worked at FOX 5 Atlanta as the anchor and reporter at the station. During the day she would serve as a reporter and co-anchored the station’s “News Edge at 11” on weeknights. Furthermore, she served as a solo anchor for a few months on the “Good Day Atlanta” show on weekends. In addition, she was nominated for “Best Anchor” by the Regional Southeast EMMY Chapter.
She has covered d a number of major events such as; Super Bowl LIII week, Hurricane Irma, officer-involved shootings in 2016, North Carolina following high-profile, and multiple days of protests in Atlanta and Charlotte. Furthermore, during Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp who had aced a contentious race against Democrat Stacey Abrams that gained national attention, she field-anchored the event.
She has also worked at WBMA-TV in Birmingham, Alabama serving as an anchor and reporter. While she was at the station, she was part of the station’s launch team for its “Focus @ 4” program in addition to serving as its “Midday News” anchor. Prior to lending a hand to the station’s coverage of the 50th Anniversary of the “Selma to Montgomery March” attended by George W. Bush, Presidents Barack Obama, and the late U.S. congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.
Her career in journalism began at WTVC-TV which is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee where she served as a multimedia journalist. While in the station, she covered breaking news, such as the 2011 tornado outbreak across the Southeast, and the deadly April 27. In addition, she also served as a writer for Crossroads News and Rolling Out.
She attended the Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Evanston Illinois where she earned her master’s degree in broadcast journalism. While she was in the University, she received a full-tuition scholarship from the McCormick Foundation. Furthermore, she was a Carnegie Corporation News 21 Fellow, and a Knight Foundation.
She attended the Emory University in Atlanta where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and journalism. For her dedication to Emory and the surrounding community, she became one of the six graduates in her class named to the school’s Hall of Fame.
She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. In addition, she mentors a number of journalists and speaks at several conferences, churches, and schools. For her involvement with youth and women, she has received many honors for her community
While she was at Dunwoody High School she co-hosted the morning announcements television show. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, dancing, going to concerts and festivals, and traveling.
