Marie Harf is an American anchor working for FOX NEWS as a liberal political commentator. She joined the FOX news team in September 2019, after previously working for Strategic Communications to Secretary of State John Kerry.
Harf completed her education at Granville High School. Subsequently, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with focus on Jewish Studies and Russian and Eastern European Studies from Indiana University Bloomington. Later, she pursued her master’s degree in Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia. Where her thesis delved into the assessment of potential ongoing regime stability in Saudi Arabia. She initiated her career at the CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence, initially as an analyst specializing in Middle Eastern leadership matters.
Later, she transitioned to becoming the media spokesperson for the CIA. During the 2012 presidential election, she played a role in shaping President Barack Obama’s national security and communications strategy. Additionally, she also served as the campaign spokesperson on national security issues. In June 2013, she assumed the role of Deputy Spokesperson for the Department of State, working under Jen Psaki. Furthermore, she has faced controversy for remarks she made during a February 16, 2015 interview on Hardball with Chris Matthews, following the release of an ISIS video depicting the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians.
Her comments on addressing the root causes of extremism, rather than solely relying on military action, led to social media ridicule with the hashtag “#JobsForISIS.” In April 2015, it was reported that U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby would replace her as Spokesperson for the Department of State. Then she served as Acting Spokesperson until May 13, 2015, after which she assumed the role of Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications to Secretary of State John Kerry. In January 2017, she became a political commentator for Fox News but later left in May 2019 to work for Rep. Seth Moulton’s presidential campaign.
Following Moulton’s campaign suspension, she became the Executive Director of the progressive Serve America PAC. She returned as a Fox News Contributor in September 2019.
