Kinimaka started surfing when she was four years old and fell deeply in love with her family’s ancient sport. At five years old, she became the only girl in her division and won her first competition. At eight years old, she was sponsored by the global lifestyle action sports brand Roxy and started surfing professionally all over the world. She continued attending public schools while juggling her academic obligations with numerous trips abroad for professional competitions. Her love of filmmaking and photography was nurtured at Kapa’a Intermediate and High School.

She created, produced, shot, and edited her first short film in 2015, which addressed domestic abuse in her home state of Hawaii. This movie, which won first place at the Hawaii ‘Olelo Youth Exchange, was Kinimaka’s first-ever submission in a film competition.
